Evans explained that the Department now has 4 scales. The department purchased one from the
impound fees and the company donated the second scale because of the misunderstanding. The police issued four citations in two days
(approximately $5,000) generating $2,428 in fine revenues for the city. The overweight violation fee is divided
between the state, county, circuit clerk and the city, with the city receiving
44%.
Boyle noted that once the word got out that Wilmington had scales the
truck traffic cleared out. The officers
were pulling the trucks over at the Dow Chemical plant but have received word
that Dow might be uncomfortable with this prearrangement.
The Mayor the purpose of the scales was to slow down and limit truck
traffic through the city and it appears to be working.
